Gluehwein (or Mulled Wine) is a German/Austrian winter-holiday drink that most tourists know as an after-ski drink. It is generally drunk warm after a long day on the slopes, and the idea is to make you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside..
Gluehwein Recipe
Not that I ever went skiing, in South Africa we hardly have snow, and in Spain, where we live, it does but not much here where we live. But I do know about my gluehwein 🙂
Good news for my friends who don´t like alcohol.. this recipe can be adapted to a non acolholic version too! Whoohoo!
So what is Gluehwein made of?
In a nutshell it´s made of red wine (or cranberry juice for the non alcoholic version), orange juice (I squeezed my own), cloves, cinnamon and brown sugar to sweeten it up a bit.. That´s all I use, and trust me it tastes delicious!
You could totally use boxed orange juice if you feel lazy…. I won´t judge 😉
Now for the recipe…. be warned this warm drink can go to your head faster than you can say MISTLETOE, so be sure to drink it slowly! A good idea is to eat something before!!
By the way, what do you guys think of my cute glass mugs I bought in Ikea? Perfect for Christmas don´t you think..?
Ingredients
- 2 cups red wine (the quality really doesn´t matter) / cranberry juice (non-alcoholic version)
- 1 freshly squeezed orange juice (boxed if you feel like taking the lazy approach - hey I´m all for it!)
- zest of 1 orange
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- whole cloves (aprox. 1 tsp)
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
Instructions
- Add all the ingredients to a heavy bottom sauce pan and bring to the boil.
- Once it has reached boil, turn down the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring regularly.
- Strain and serve warm.

So are you guys, like me, getting super excited for Christmas?? The Malls here in Gran Canaria already have their Christmas decorations up! Every year they put it up earlier. I find myself wondering if it is because they want to make more sales, or if like me, they just can´t get enough of this magical time of the year…
Now if you are the grinch type, you probably have closed this post by now.. BUT WAIT.. STOP.. IN THE NAME OF LOVE (I just couldn´t help myself…)! Even the grinch in you, would want this recipe.. Trust Me!!
Happy weekend guys!

Johlene, this drink sounds lovely. I’m assuming it’s safe to double the recipe ingredients if I need a larger batch for guests, right?
Johlene Orton says
Yes you could easily do that, this recipe doubles-up very nicely 🙂

I love spiced wine, especially after long winter walks… It warms you up in a second. I have to try the non alcoholic version some day… Or not I always prefer it with wine 🙂
Johlene Orton says
Thanks Teresa! Yeah I prefer the option that includes wine too 🙂
